Oral Microbiome Profiling of Pediatric Type 1 Diabetes: Comparative Analysis of Saliva and Dental Plaque Using 16S rRNA Sequencing

This study explores the relationship between the oral microbiome and Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) in children by comparing microbial communities from saliva and dental plaque. Using 16S rRNA gene sequencing, the study profiles bacterial diversity and composition to identify microbial patterns associated with T1D. Results show that the salivary microbiome more accurately distinguishes children with T1D from healthy controls than dental plaque, highlighting saliva as a promising, non-invasive biospecimen for microbiome-based disease monitoring and early detection.
