The study aimed on identifying new factors involved in unconventional chitinase secretion in the smut fungus Ustilago maydis. A UV-based forward genetic screen was conducted using three reporters for unconventional secretion. Mutants with diminished reporter activity were isolated and one of them was sequenced by whole genome sequencing to identify the responsible mutation.
