Orchid occurrence records from the Bird's Head Peninsula, West Papua (2016–2024)

This dataset comprises 1,082 orchid occurrence records collected during 28 field expeditions conducted between 2016 and 2024 across the Bird’s Head Peninsula and surrounding islands, West Papua, Indonesia. Records represent more than 290 species from about 82 genera and are based on in situ observation, photographic documentation, and voucher-based verification. To reduce risks associated with illegal collection and trade, precise geographic coordinates for threatened, newly discovered, and potentially undescribed orchid taxa have been withheld or spatially generalised in the publicly released dataset. Exact collection dates have also been removed; year and month are retained to preserve temporal context. The dataset supports biodiversity research, orchid conservation planning, and field-based assessments in one of the plant diversity dark-spot regions of New Guinea. Species identifications were supported by expert input from multiple orchid taxonomists; individual determinations are indicated in the IDENTIFIED_BY field.
