<P>Abstract copyright UK Data Service and data collection copyright owner.</P><br>These data are part of an eight-nation survey which examined the expectations and political actions of adults, parent and child `pairs' and undergraduates.<br><br><B>Main Topics</B>:<BR><br><ul><li>Opinion of material standard of living and general quality of life (past, present and future), assessment of personal merit, the most important things in life (3 best and 3 worst).</li><li> Political support (subject, father and mother), interest and participation, voting patterns, political efficacy, subjective social class.</li><li>Which social groups respondents considered to be over rewarded or over privileged and which they thought were not rewarded sufficiently and/or denied basic rights.</li><li>Rating of personal affinity with various social groups.</li><li>Respondents' proposed course of action if a new law (local or national) were introduced which he/she regarded as unjust or harmful.</li><li>Subjective assessment of position on political scale of Left - Right, personal definition of 'Left' and 'Right', personal political priorities.</li><li>Attitudes to various forms of protest plus any personal experience, assessment of effectiveness. Whether law-breaking/violence was ever justified, attitude to government action in such situations, attitude to young people, whether country was run by 'big interests', whether government was trustworthy, whether politicians using the media were truthful. Satisfaction with own education.</li><li>Youths 16-20: whether living with parents, frequency of discussions with father/mother/close friends about public affairs and politics, studies or work, sex, religion. Whether agree/disagree with views of father/mother/friends, whether respondent wants his/her life to be like that of his/her parents).</li><li>Background Variables: age, sex, marital status, number of siblings, children, ethnic origin, age finished full-time education, type of school/college, highest qualification. Occupation (respondent, and/or head of household): position held; nature of firm; full/part time, nature of supervision, periods of unemployment (when, length), income. Employment status (for occupation and employment status, sub-categories are unemployed, retired or permanently disabled, housewives, students/schoolchildren and farmers). Residence: tenure; type. Occupation of parents, political preference of parents, type of school father attended and school leaving age, parents' place of residence.</li></ul>
