2017 SERDP Smoldering Combustion Project Field Data and Emissions Results

2017 field data and emissions results from the SERDP funded study "Ignition, Propagation, and Emissions of Smoldering Combustion: Experimental Analysis and Physics-Based Modeling". Two field experiments were performed near Winthrop, Washington. The first set of plots (Winthrop #1) were established in duff near large trees prior to prescribed fires. Thermocouples were installed at specific depths to measure heating and rate of spread. At these plots emissions samples were collected at time interval as smoldering combustion progressed. At the second site (Winthrop#2) single points were ignited in duff and as smoldering advanced in a circular pattern emissions sample were collected at time intervals. The emissions samples were analyzed for carbon species by gas chromatography , and emission factors and rate of carbon release was developed from the results.
