Thauera selenatis is a member of the ?-subclass of proteobacteria and possesses a mechanism for anaerobic respiration that can utilise selenate as the sole electron acceptor. Here we report the completion of the genome sequence of T. selenatis ATCC 55363. The genes encoding respiratory pathways have been found in the genome along with operons for metal resistance and protein export systems. The T. selenatis genome will allow us to make considerable progress in our understanding of the mechanism of dissimilatory reduction of selenium oxyanions, which should prove to be valuable when designing better systems for the bio-remediation of toxic seleniferous wastewaters.
