Field-aligned Poynting flux is obtained by using in-situ measurements of ion velocity converted to convection electric field, and magnetic field perturbation based on three years of observations at ∼850 km made by the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) F17. The positive field-aligned Poynting flux represents the electromagnetic energy flowing parallel to the magnetic field line to the Earth, and vice versa. Field-aligned Poynting flux with 1 s time resolution are mapped to the magnetic latitude (MLAT) / magnetic local time (MLT) coordinate system, then binned to 1°× 0.5 h cells in the dayside polar cap. The mean of the calculated PF in each cell is taken as the cell value. This results in the field-aligned Poynting flux distribution in the dayside polar cap.
