According to a survey conducted by Rakuten Insight, around 75 percent of respondents in Indonesia stated that GoFood was the food delivery app they used the most. The application was developed by an Indonesian startup, GoJek, the first unicorn company in the country. The food delivery market in Indonesia The food delivery market in Indonesia has proliferated in recent years. The annual revenue of Indonesia’s online food delivery market is expected to increase to over 33.2 million U.S. dollars in 2027 from 12.2 U.S. dollars in 2022. The market is dominated by two big players, Grab and Gojek. In 2022, these players had a gross merchandise value (GMV) share of 49 and 44 percent of the total GMV of 4.5 billion U.S. dollars, respectively. User preferences and behavior The online food delivery market in Indonesia received a major boost during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. During this time, Indonesians enjoyed ordering food from home while being in lockdown, with social distancing measures in place to curb the spread of the virus. This habit has since persisted as people realized how convenient and hassle-free it is to order their favorite food in this manner. A recent study revealed that Indonesian consumers spent on average between 50 thousand to 100 thousand Indonesian rupiahs for a single order on a food delivery application. Local cuisine is the type of food mostly ordered by Indonesians through a delivery application.
