VPRS 1192 Petitions

This series consists of petitions received by the Colonial, and later the Chief Secretary. Many of the petitions were actually addressed to the Governor or other officials. As the Colonial/Chief Secretary was the only medium of communication from the public to the Governor or other government officials the petitions were sent to this office. It would appear that they were referred to the petitioned official and then returned to the Colonial/Chief Secretary's Office. The petitions were registered as inward correspondence but were subsequently filed separately from the normal run of correspondence because of their large or cumbersome size. Large files which did not fit in the "pigeon hole" presses used to store correspondence were placed in deep drawers, beneath the pigeon holes.
