Immigration Detention in Switzerland (2011-2017)

Codebook, Description of Microdata The data were requested to the State Secretariat for Migration (SEM) in theframework of the research project "Restricting Immigration: Practices, Experiencesand Resistance" which is part of the nccr - on the move. The project addressesexclusion practices in the realm of migration control and is particularly interested inthe use of immigration detention as a measure to ensure the enforcement of removalsfrom the country. The data include the immigration detention orders issued andregistered by the cantons in the SYMIC/ZEMIS database between January 2011and September 2017. They provide a general view on the use of detention in thewhole Swiss territory as well as the opportunity to explore cantonal differences in thedecision-making on who to detain and for how long.
