Barbados Mercury, and Bridge-town Gazette

Published weekly and originally known as the Mercury Gazette the Barbados Mercury and Bridge-town Gazette was established in 1762 in Bridgetown. Witnessing the development of Barbados during the 18th and 19th centuries, the Gazette depicted daily colonial life under British control, including the transitionary period from slavery to abolition of the early 1800's. In addition to local news, the Gazette described news and events from throughout the British colonies in the Caribbean. Of particular note, the paper included advertisements for the purchase of enslaved individuals and notices concerning fugitives in slavery. The paper was written in English.
