Acoustic Data from the 2021 Heliotrope Campaign to Capture Signals from the Starliner Launch Attempt

On August 3, 2021, an attempt was to launch the Boeing Starliner Capsule from Vandenberg Space Force Base. Our team decided to launch stratospheric balloons with infrasound sensing payloads to determine if the sounds from this rocket would be detectable via the atmoSOFAR channel. Unfortunately, the Starliner launch was scrubbed several hours after launchign the balloons. However, the airborne acoustic recorders captured sounds from a set of small ground explosions and thunder. This dataset reveals new details on the detection range of infrasound sensors in the stratosphere and records thunder signals of a type seldom captured on the ground. This record consists of acoustic data in Seismic Access Code (SAC) file format, balloon trajectory data in ASCII format, and a document describing the flight campaign.
