Magneticresonanceimaging(MRI)isacornerstonetechnologyinclinical diagnosticsandinvivoresearch,offeringunparalleledvisualization capabilities.Despitesignificantadvancementsinthepastcentury,traditional 1HMRIstillfacessensitivitylimitationsthathinderitsfurtherdevelopment. Toovercomethischallenge,hyperpolarizationmethodshavebeenintroduced, disruptingthethermalequilibriumofnuclearspinsandleadingtoan increasedproportionofhyperpolarizedspins,therebyenhancingsensitivityby hundredstotensofthousandsoftimes.Amongthesemethods, hyperpolarized(HP)129XeMRI,alsoknownasultrasensitive129XeMRI, standsoutforachievingthehighestpolarizationenhancementandhas recentlyreceivedclinicalapproval.Iteffectivelytacklesthechallengeofweak MRIsignalsfromlowprotondensityinthelungs.HP129XeMRIisvaluable forassessingstructuralandfunctionalchangesinlungphysiologyduring pulmonarydiseaseprogression,trackingcells,anddetectingtargetmolecules atpico-molarconcentrations.Thisreviewsummarizesrecentdevelopmentsin HP129XeMRI,includingitsphysicalprinciples,manufacturingmethods,in vivocharacteristics,anddiverseapplicationsinbiomedical,chemical,and materialsciences.Inaddition,itcarefullydiscussespotentialtechnical improvementsandfutureprospectsforenhancingitsutilityinthesefields, furtherestablishingHP129XeMRI’simportanceinadvancingmedical imagingandresearch.
