VPRS 1146 Register of Tolls, Punts and Ferries

The Central Roads Board, beginning in 1853, the first agency concerned with the establishment of main roads and bridges, was abolished on 1 January 1858 and succeeded by the Department of Roads and Bridges (VA 2964) which operated under the statutory control of the Board of Land and Works (VA 744).One of the means whereby the construction and maintenance of roads and bridges was financed was by the charging of tolls along main roads and for the crossing of rivers. Toll funds were utilised for the letting of construction and maintenance contracts. This series provides a summary record of the tolls, punts and ferries operating in each year.
