This study is the first to elucidate the complex effect of foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) antigens on the innate and cellular immunity of hosts. We found that interleukin (IL)-23 was particularly important in the early stages of host defense. Furthermore, we demonstrated that pattern recognition receptors (PRRs) are crucial for this early expression of IL-23. In particular, the signaling pathways of STING, Mincle, Dectin-1, and TLR-7/8 were critical for host defense within seven days of viral challenge.
