Influence of feeding black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens), cricket (Gryllodes sigillatus), and superworm (Zophobas morio) on the gut microbiota of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss)

Due to the evidence black soldier fly larvae meal may positively alter the gut microbiota of salmonids, it was hypothesized that feeding cricket and superworm meals may induce a similar modulating effect. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of feeding 15% inclusion of black soldier fly, cricket and superworm meals in partial replacement of fishmeal and fish oil, on the gut microbiota of farmed rainbow trout when compared to a control diet. The relative abundance and diversity of the bacteria in the distal intestine, as well as feeds, were investigated using high-throughput sequencing of the V3-V4 region of 16S rRNA gene using the Illumina MiSeq platform.
