Statistics and raw data for article High toxin production and multidrug resistance in Clostridioides difficile PCR ribotype 046 by C. Magnusson et al.

<i>Clostridioides difficile</i> is the leading cause of healthcare-associated diarrhea. Among its known virulence factors are the ability to form spores and produce toxins. An extensive and mortal outbreak of <i>C. difficile</i>, dominated by PCR ribotype (RT) 046, was detected in 2011 in a hospital in Region Jönköping County, Sweden. The present study aimed to investigate and compare phenotypic characteristics like toxin production, spore formation and antibiotic resistance of <i>C. difficile</i> RT 046 to other RTs found in the outbreak. The main outbreak strain RT 046 produced high level of toxin and was multidrug resistant. In conclusion these two essential features of this strain may explain the higher mortality rate and its ability to spread throughout the hospital.
