This study investigates the trend of light pollution in Chattogram, Bangladesh, over a 30-year period from 1992 to 2021. Utilizing nighttime satellite data from the DMSP/OLS and VIIRS, the research applies higher-order multiple regression analysis with 2012 as the reference year. Findings reveal a significant increase in light pollution, from 9.2% in 1992 to 24.3% in 2021, with the most pronounced rise in the south-west direction. The Chattogram Metropolitan area experiences the highest levels of light pollution, followed by adjacent regions. A strong positive correlation is identified between built-up areas and light pollution, particularly in the metropolitan area (R² = 0.508). The study attributes the increase in light pollution to uncontrolled urban expansion, industrial growth, and excessive port illumination. Recommendations include regulating urban and industrial development and controlling nighttime lighting to mitigate light pollution. This research aims to support environmental conservation planning and assist organizations in identifying and addressing light pollution zones through effective nighttime environmental policies.
