Samples from a 16th century CE Italian mummy were analyzed for potential pathogens. An Escherichia coli genome was identified in one of its gallstones (LMN07) and was subsequently meticulously characterized. It was determined to have been an opportunistic pathogen and contained no acquired resistances.This project was also supported by the Humans & The Microbiome CIFAR grant.
