Soil bacteria and mercury under gold mining and climate variation in Brazil

Artisanal gold mining is a major source of mercury pollution in tropical soils. Studying four Brazilian biomes, we found that mining reduces soil carbon and nitrogen, increases toxic mercury forms, and decreases microbial diversity. Pastures supported richer, more functional microbial communities. These results highlight the need for restoring organic matter and reducing mercury risks.
