VPRS 19753 Birth Register

This series comprises volumes recording births at the Queen Victoria Memorial Hospital (VA 1254). Under the Birth Notification Act 1930 and subsequent acts, hospitals were required to report all births conducted at the hospital and as such maintained birth registers. Information recorded in the volumes includes the name, sex and date of birth of each child, as well as the father’s name, occupation, age and location and date of marriage; and the mother’s name (maiden), age, and birthplace. Additionally, the names of the attending accoucheur (midwife?) and nurse are recorded. Sometimes, additional remarks are also recorded. From January 1945 a column was added counting the births by financial year to aid statistical reporting. Some volumes contain statistical summaries inside the front cover.
