An arid ecosystem may be very sensitive to nitrogen and phosphorus inputs, but the associated ecosystem-specific responses of soil microbes have not been well studied. To assess the effects of nitrogen and phosphorus enrichment on plant and prokaryotic community diversity, we conducted a two-year experiment on nitrogen and phosphorus addition in a desert grassland in northwest China.
