Experimental Sound Works: 269 approaches to sample based composition

My research sits at the intersection of music technology, recording techniques and approaches to composition in contemporary music production. Through practical application and extended musicianship, I exhibit highly nuanced approaches to the development of sample based compositional content. Combined with extended recording techniques, this work comprises of 269 individual samples ranging from one beat to those of four bars in length; exploring how hybridised approaches to developed musicianship allow for the development of sample based compositional content. Drawing on Williams' 2013 notion of borrowing and sampling, the work further seeks to outline the social and musical importance of sample based approaches to composition by creating history and lineage, immortalizing icons and creating links with other genres. In this work, I am experimenting with the hybridisation of non-western and western appropriated musical influences in order to create a bespoke sample pack. Compositional approaches are developed through the implementation of extended musicianship, critical thinking and listening skills combined with emerging recording techniques, whilst implementing acquired historical and socio-historical knowledge of genres. The significance of the research lies within the integration of hybridised approaches offering cultural differentiation to create new sounds. Originally commissioned by Samplephonics for world distribution via their online retail outlet, the work has been commissioned by Musical Futures Australia who secured a $2.5 million dollar grant from the Victorian State Government to develop and implement musical initiatives and strategies throughout Australian high school curriculum. This research supports the integration of sample-based approaches to composition and live performance in performance led practices, whilst assisting in the development of creative practices in composition.
