This report presents selected findings from the 2025 Learning Design Futures survey, conducted by researchers from three Australian universities in partnership with the Australian Institute of Training and Development. Based on 268 responses, the report provides a descriptive account of the learning design profession across education, enterprise, government and non-profit contexts, with a primary focus on Australia and New Zealand. The findings show a highly qualified, experienced and increasingly specialised workforce engaged in curriculum and assessment design, online and blended learning, learning technology, accessibility, inclusive practice, and collaboration with subject matter experts. Respondents identified theoretical knowledge, digital capability, interpersonal skills, project management, adaptability, empathy and critical thinking as central to effective practice. The survey also highlights ongoing challenges, including inconsistent role definitions, unclear career pathways, variable recognition, and limited awareness or use of professional codes and ethical frameworks. Overall, the report positions learning design as a maturing, values-driven profession that would benefit from stronger standards, clearer pathways, and greater sector-wide recognition.
