NRS-16731 | Registers of Admission, Progress and Withdrawal [Copeland Public School]

The purpose of an admission register was to record basic details about children admitted to the school, and about their parents or guardians. The registers were also used to record the progress of the children through various classes and the date of their leaving the school. These volumes contain information pertaining to each pupil including: date of admission; pupil's name; date of birth; religious denomination; name of previous school and date of leaving. The following details are recorded about the child's parents or guardians: name, residence and occupation. The pupil's date of admission to each subsequent grade, date of leaving the school and any occupation entered into on leaving school is also recorded; this last column is also used to record the school to which a pupil may have transferred.The present series consists of two volumes, which together present a complete record of enrolments at Copeland Public School The first volume also records two boys who had originally enrolled at the school’s precursor, the Copeland North Public School [I] (Agency no. 3107) which closed in 1912; their enrolments are treated as though they had been continuous.The arrangement of the entries in the first volume in this series requires some elucidation. This volume commences with a double-page opening listing girls and boys on opposite pages in order of admission down to March of 1920. These pages are then cancelled, and the next opening records all current enrolments for 1920, excluding those pupils who had left before that year. This in turn is cancelled and replaced by a listing of the enrolments current during the first half of 1921. The next opening gives a list of current enrolments as at July, 1921, continued until the end of the year; whereafter a new listing is drawn up for 1922. This is followed by an attempt to record all enrolments from 1915 until 1922, whether they were still current at the time when this compilation was made (July, 1922), or not. The compilation list is then repeated in the following opening, and continued until the end of 1923. Finally, the complete list is copied out once more, and this final version is continued until September, 1962, when the first volume comes to an end. The second volume commences with a list of all enrolments current in 1963, including some transferred from the earlier book, which list is continued until the school closes at the end of 1965.
