US Truck-Involved Fatal Crashes (FARS): Filtered Dataset 2018–2024

This dataset is a filtered subset of records from the NHTSA Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS), spanning from 2018 to 2024. It includes only fatal crashes involving at least one medium or heavy commercial truck (FARS BODY_TYP codes 60–69). The dataset contains 33,898 rows, covering all 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia. Each row represents a single fatal crash and includes the following columns: year, state FIPS code, state name, FARS city code, city name, state-case ID, total fatalities, latitude, and longitude. Passenger pickups with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) under 10,000 lbs are excluded, aligning with the standard NHTSA/IIHS definition of a truck crash. A companion analysis script, `analyze.py`, downloads raw FARS National CSV zip files from static.nhtsa.gov. It then performs an accident-by-vehicle join based on `BODY_TYP` and generates per-city aggregations.
