Faecal microbiota in pediatric patients with SBS

Short bowel syndrome (SBS) is a rare multisystem condition characterised by nutrient malabsorption. Clinically, patients present with symptoms of vomiting, diarrhoea, and signs of macro- and micro-nutrient malabsorption. Within the SBS spectrum, intestinal microbiota composition is essential for immune system development, nutrient absorption and final prognosis. The study aimed to analyse the different microbiota profiles of paediatric patients with SBS during various stages of the disease. Each patient showed a dinstinctive microbiota in accordance with personal clinical condition, therefore faecal microbiota was also influenced by the percentage of colon anatomy after surgery and Intestinal Failure classification class.
