Lithium-ion batteries are used in a wide range of products, from smartphones to electric vehicles (EVs). As of 2020, the majority of the world's largest lithium-ion battery factories were located in China, which also accounted for the largest share of the global battery production capacity. The world's largest lithium-ion battery manufacturer, CATL (CATL New Energy Technology Co., Ltd.), a Chinese company, held nearly 37 percent of the global market share as of 2023. Originally developed for household appliances, lithium-ion batteries have seen increasing demand as automotive batteries. With the global shift towards environmentally friendly alternative fuels, the demand and supply of lithium-ion batteries are expected to continue to grow. Moreover, the average price of lithium-ion battery packs has been declining since 2013 due to improved production technology. However, as lithium is a natural resource with limited availability, the costs associated with mining operations and long-distance transportation are incurred.
