Domestic Rail

Research Background Craft objects often sit within a liminal zone between practicality and aesthetic, use and display. Domestic Rail continues Edgoose's exploration into the functional and spatial ambiguities of craft objects and also the aesthetic and technological potential of industrial materials such as titanium. Research Contribution Domestic Rail explores how the object's specific relationship to a given site can give rise to particular modes of encounter. Through considering the relationship of the artwork to the space of home Domestic Rail challenges established frameworks of use and functionality for fine craft objects and questions and extends the object's relation to time and space via a linear composition. Domestic Rail continues Edgoose's significant contribution to research into the use of niobium and titanium for which he has developed an international reputation. Research Significance Domestic Rail was one of 100 artworks selected for the finalists' exhibition of the Victorian Craft Award-Victoria's largest biennial exhibition of craft artists. Showcasing excellence and innovation across all mediums, the awards have created a new demonstrable standard for excellence within the crafts.
