The purpose of an admission register was to record basic details about children admitted to the school, and about their parents or guardians. The registers were also used to record the progress of the children through various classes and the date of their leaving the school.The series from Thornton Public School is currently represented by its first volume, in which are recorded all admissions to the school from its opening in 1919 until the end of 1959, and the further progress of some of these pupils until 1967. This volume contains information pertaining to each pupil including: date of admission; pupil's name, date of birth and religious denomination; name of previous school and date of leaving. The following details are recorded about the child's parents or guardians: name, residence and occupation. The pupil's date of admission to each subsequent grade and date of leaving the school are also recorded. The volume makes provision to record any occupation entered into by the pupil on leaving school, but with the passage of time this column comes to be used more commonly to indicate the school to which a pupil may have transferred.Girls and boys are listed on opposite pages in order of admission, and numbered in two distinct sequences from the beginning of the volume (and series) until the end of 1953. Thereafter a new numbering system is adopted; the numbering in each sequence begins anew at the commencement of each school year, and the last two digits of the year-number are added to the entry-number as a suffix. Until the end of 1955 distinct sequences for boys and girls are still maintained, but from the beginning of 1956 the entries, while still appearing on facing pages, are numbered in one consolidated sequence.Admission registers in paper format ceased in 1999 when the department moved to recording enrolment details in electronic format.
