Studying simplified phytoplankton community models in the laboratory will confirm the results of fieldwork and give an in-depth mechanistic understanding of biological interactions. By biological effects-driven co-cultivation screening, one centric diatom, Coscinodiscus radiatus, and four phylogenetically different bacterial isolates, Mameliella CS4, Roseovarius Rose1, Croceibacer Cro1, and Marinobacter CS1 with sequenced genomes, were selected to establish a model community.
