The major scientific objectives of this investigation were as follows: · to enhance the fundamental understanding of dynamics of insoluble particles at the solid-liquid interface; · to obtain experimental data for the critical velocity of particle engulfment in a convection-free environment; · to validate present theoretical models; · to improve the understanding of physics associated with solidification of liquid metals - ceramic particles mixtures; · to investigate aspects of melt processing of particulate metal matrix composites in the unique microgravity environment which will yield some vital information for terrestrial applications; · to further develop the elements of the numerical model into a comprehensive model that takes into account convection effects.
