Tropical cyclone Cheneso, Madagascar, 2023

Photo credits: @Copernicus Sentinel On 19 January 2023, tropical cyclone Cheneso formed over the southwestern Indian Ocean and made landfall, as a tropical storm, at around 11.00 local time. On 26 January, the tropical storm peaked as a tropical cyclone and made landfall for the second time. This cyclone was the first cyclone during the 2022–2023 cyclone season in Southern Africa and affected different regions for more than one week. Around 470 000 hectares of land were affected, 141 000 hectares of agricultural land, and nearly 90 000 people. The Data in Emergencies team at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) examined satellite images in the days following tropical cyclone Cheneso in order to understand the impact.
