VPRS 11897 Individual Management of Female Prisoner Files

This series commenced in 1992 and serves as a complete record of the day to day management of a female prisoner during their time of incarceration.The files contain information such as incident reports involving the prisoner, details of any discipline, changes to the prisoners classification and other prisoner management information. The files are known as Individual Management of Prisoner Files (IMP).They also contain details of the prisoners Local Management Plan which covered the prisoners plans and goals whilst in prison. This can include participation in sport and educational improvement. There is also information concerning sessions the prisoner attended prior to release that in preparation for life outside prison.When a person entered prison two files are created. The IMP file followed the prisoner from prison to prison and is returned to the Classification Office, the creation and storage point for all prisoner-related files, to be filed with the Classification file (see VPRS 8818) once the prisoner is released or is deceased.The Classification Office was located at Pentridge Prison until that prison closed in December 1997. Since January 1998 the Classification Office has been located at the Melbourne Assessment Prison.The classification files, which have existed since the 1940s, contain much the same information as the IMP file, although the IMP file contains more day to day prisoner information. The Correctional Services Division envisages that the IMP file will eventually replace the classification file.ConsignmentsAs at January 1999 only one consignment of this series has been transferred into the custody of the Public Record Office Victoria. These records were transferred because they relate to deceased prisoners only.
