Streptomyces fragilis is the producer of Azaserine, a diazo natural product which can be used as a natural carbene donor. Carbene mediated reactions have wide applications and play important roles in chemical synthesis. We mined this genome to discover the azaserine biosynthetic pathway and use it to engineer a bacteria to synthesize new molecules through carbene mediated abiological reactions.
