Protest Surveys: Fridays for Future - Global Climate Strike on March 3rd, 2023. Survey at the Demonstrations in Berlin and Bremen

Since 2003, researchers associated with the Institute for the Study of Protest and Social Movements (Institut für Protest- und Bewegungsforschung, ipb, http://protestinstitut.eu) have conducted surveys at demonstrations. This study is part of this ongoing series. The aim of the study is to gain insights into the composition and attitudes of participants at the “Fridays for Future” demonstrations for climate protection. The focus is particularly on socio-demographic characteristics, political attitudes of the respondents encountered at the demonstrations and on the development of the climate protests since 2019 (Wahlström et al. 2019; de Moor et al. 2020; Haunss and Sommer 2020). Particular attention has been paid to the demonstrators’ evaluation of other climate protest groups. The demonstrations took place on March 3rd in Berlin and in Bremen. According to the organizers, 18,000 people participated in the demonstration in Berlin and 3,000 in Bremen. The police count was 2,200 for Bremen, in Berlin, no police count was available, the research team estimated the attendance to be 1,200 in Bremen. The questionnaire consisted of 61 questions. It was available in two languages: German and English. In order to allow for comparison with earlier protest surveys, the questionnaire relied on questions used in earlier questionnaires at Fridays for Future demonstrations and the ipb base questionnaire. The questionnaire consists of the following groups of questions: • Motivation: open question about the motivation to take part in the demonstration • Protest mobilization: knowledge about the demonstration, mobilization network • Political activity: Membership in civil society organizations, past protest activity, forms of action • Political attitudes: evaluation of democracy, trust in institutions, self-placement on the political spectrum, party affiliation, voting tendency • Sociodemographic questions: gender, year of birth, education, occupation Diese Studie ist Teil einer fortlaufenden Reihe. Ziel der Studie ist es, Einblicke in die Zusammensetzung und Einstellungen der Teilnehmer*innen der „Fridays for Future“-Demonstrationen für den Klimaschutz zu gewinnen. Der Fokus liegt insbesondere auf soziodemografischen Merkmalen, politischen Einstellungen der bei den Demonstrationen angetroffenen Befragten und auf der Entwicklung der Klimaproteste seit 2019 (Wahlström et al. 2019; de Moor et al. 2020; Haunss und Sommer 2020). Besonderes Augenmerk wurde auf die Bewertung anderer Klimaprotestgruppen durch die Demonstranten gelegt. Die Demonstrationen fanden am 3. März in Berlin und in Bremen statt. Nach Angaben der Organisatoren nahmen 18.000 Menschen an der Demonstration in Berlin und 3.000 in Bremen teil. Die Polizei zählte 2.200 Teilnehmer in Bremen, in Berlin lag keine Polizeizahl vor, das Forschungsteam schätzte die Teilnehmerzahl in Bremen auf 1.200. Der Fragebogen umfasste 61 Fragen. Er war in zwei Sprachen verfügbar: Deutsch und Englisch. Um einen Vergleich mit früheren Protestumfragen zu ermöglichen, stützte sich der Fragebogen auf Fragen, die bereits in früheren Fragebögen bei „Fridays for Future“-Demonstrationen und im ipb-Basisfragebogen verwendet wurden. Der Fragebogen besteht aus den folgenden Fragengruppen: • Motivation: offene Frage zur Motivation, an der Demonstration teilzunehmen • Protestmobilisierung: Wissen über die Demonstration, Mobilisierungsnetzwerk • Politische Aktivität: Mitgliedschaft in zivilgesellschaftlichen Organisationen, bisherige Protestaktivitäten, Aktionsformen • Politische Einstellungen: Bewertung der Demokratie, Vertrauen in Institutionen, Selbsteinstufung auf dem politischen Spektrum, Parteizugehörigkeit, Wahlverhalten • Soziodemografische Fragen: Geschlecht, Geburtsjahr, Bildung, Beruf
