A global dataset of directional migration networks of migratory birds

Migratory birds are flying vertebrates that migrate back and forth seasonally. They link separate ecosystems through their unique flight and dispersal abilities. With the development of remote sensing tracking technologies, real-time monitoring surveys of bird migration have become possible. Herein, we systematically reviewed Chinese and English literature published between 1993 and 2023 to extract detailed geographic information on bird species, migration times, migration starting points, migration terminations, and migration pathways to build a global dataset of migration networks of birds. This dataset comprises 42,844 geo-referenced records at the provincial level, covering 112 bird species and their 1,454 migratory routes across 189 countries or regions, revealing the geographical distribution of different bird migration patterns, including intercontinental and intracontinental migration and the global distribution of bird migrations at the level of different families. These data help to further investigate the drivers of bird migration, changes in migration routes and their impacts on different ecosystems.
