NRS-21403 | Property registers [Board of Fire Commissioners]

This series is comprised of registers of properties acquired and maintained primarily for use as fire stations. The registers record information about properties acquired from as early as the 1870s but it appears that the volumes were started later, probably after the Board of Fire Commissioners began operating in 1910, at which time historical data was entered.There are three types of property register: Deeds, Reserved & Dedicated Lands, and Leased Lands.For each property, facing pages record details of the land (left) and the building (right). The information generally recorded includes the fire station name, town or municipality, fire district and division and method of acquirement (e.g. by purchase, by dedication, by reservation, leased, rented).Information about the land includes particulars and description (situation, dimensions, survey); title details; from whom acquired; date; cost; and valuation details, and a sketch plan of the local area is also provided. Information about the building includes description; architect and builder; date; cost; and valuation details, and occasionally a ground plan is provided. The third deed register differs in format from the previous two but essentially the same information is recorded. The Lease Register additionally records lease-specific details such as date, term, rent, and how payable. The amount of information varies from property to property and not all columns are completed for all properties.Although there are three types of register, they appear to have been maintained together. If a property's status changed, for example if a leased property was purchased, it would be recorded in a different register and the entry in the original register cancelled.Each register has an index in the front which lists the place names in alphabetical divisions with a reference to the entry or page number in the volume.
