Crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM) is a specialized mode of photosynthesis as an adaption to seasonally dry environments. CAM plants feature much higher water-use efficiency relative to C3 and C4 plants because their stomata open at night when evapo-transpiration rates are low. Kalanchoe laxiflora is a representative obligate CAM species in the dicotyledonous lineages. The genome of Kalanchoe laxiflora could provide insights into the molecular basis of CAM evolution.
