Rapid Flares from TeV Gamma-Ray Blazars

We propose to observe a known TeV gammaray blazar in outburst. The observationwill be supported by coordinated groundbased observations at TeV energies. Themain thrust of the proposed observation is to study the flaring phenomenon onsubhour timescales jointly at Xray and TeV energies. XMM covers a criticalspectral range for studying TeV gammaray blazars, because the SED of suchsources peaks in or near its passing band. The data will also allowinvestigations of correlated variability of the Xray and TeV gammarayemission, spectral hysteresis, and hardnessintensity correlation. The resultsmay shed significant light on the properties of emitting regions in the jets ofTeV gammaray blazars, emission mechanisms, and the composition of the jets (i.e., leptonic vs hadronic). truncated!, Please see actual data for full text [truncated!, Please see actual data for full text]
