This study aimed to investigate Thai undergraduate students’ perceptions of advantages and challenges towards online English learning and to study the students’ needs to improve online English learning. The population and samples were 100 undergraduate students. A set of questionnaires and semi-structured interviews were used as the research tools. Data analysis employed descriptive statistics, namely the percentage, means, and standard deviation. As for the interview, content analysis was applied. Overall, findings revealed the study results were divided into three aspects: 1) The students support online English learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. Online English learning is helpful for students to improve their English skills, is convenient, and offers flexibility. 2) The students encounter some challenges with online English learning in terms of accessibility of the Internet during online English learning, managing English learning through online systems, and adapting to online English learning. Nevertheless, it also presents various constraints such as unstable Internet, students’ surroundings, students’ inflexibility, some students were less motivated and interactive, and more difficulty practicing conversation. 3) Students also need to improve online English learning in terms of stability of internet access, interaction and engagement between students and teachers, attractive teaching and learning material and content. Furthermore, concerning instructors, students need interesting, motivated, innovative, and enjoyable teaching strategies, a focus on developing speaking skills, and examinations, appropriate evaluations, and lengths of time in classes and exams that are appropriate for the learners. In conclusion, the results indicated that students have positive and negative perceptions on online English learning during the COVID-19 pandemic.
