"Many high-speed lasers have very low input threshold to enable sensitivity needed to produce nanosecond pulses. However, the low threshold also means the input is very sensitive to noise. In our study, the laser can be triggered purely by noise with voltage level as low as 20mV, which introduces reliability issues for our downstream single-photon avalanche diode (SPAD) imaging system. To improve trigger robustness, three dedicated circuits employing low-voltage differential signaling (LVDS), low-voltage CMOS (LVCMOS), and open-drain protocols are developed to condition and transmit the laser activation signal in order to improve noise immunity. By leveraging techniques such as differential signaling, input hysteresis, and signal isolation, all three channels prove effective in suppressing undesired noise contamination and hence lowering the false triggering rate."
