Conflict analysis in Nord Kivu, DRC

In the eastern provinces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo – Ituri, Nord Kivu and Sud Kivu – the impact of the conflict and insecurity has taken a large toll on agriculture and livelihoods. In Nord Kivu, the situation has deteriorated since January 2024 following an upsurge in conflict and insecurity due to intensified attacks by the March 23 Movement (M23) armed group and its allies, leading to an expansion of the conflict and the capture of towns and villages in Masisi and Rutshuru territories (IOM, 2024a). The Data in Emergencies (DIEM) team at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) examined several geospatial datasets to better analyse the conflict and help the country teams better understand the impact for better targeting. This StoryMap provides an assessment of the potential impact of the conflict on agriculture, natural resources and livelihoods with a specific focus on understanding the conflict dynamics in relation to crop production in the eastern provinces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
