Marine bacteria, including those inhabiting sea sponges, have previously been reported to be a promising source of polyesterase enzymes, which have received recent attention due to their potential ability to degrade polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic. This study describes the first description of a cutinase-like polyesterase, BgP, from a deep-sea sponge-derived actinobacterium, Brachybacterium ginsengisoli B129SM11. Using an overall classic screening on different polyesters substrates and a genome mining-guided approach, this enzyme was revealed to harbour features of special interest for its application as a biocatalyst in plastic biorecycling processes.
