Georeferenced database of Medieval military and religious sites in Southern Italy - ver 1.0

This database, created by Marco Casazza and Fabrizio Barone, contains the georeferenced positions of fortifications and religious sites in Southern Italy. This version 1.0 includes the current administrative areas belonging to the provinces of Salerno and Avellino (Campania region) and Potenza (Basilicata region). The interest is focused to sites ranging from the Late antique settlements up to the Longobard and Norman epoch.
The original sites list is derived from the website Mondi Medioevali (https://www.mondimedievali.net/CASTELLI/index.htm), edited by Raffaele Licinio. However, no text, figure or material, is taken from the website. Instead, the site was used as a data source for an initial list of sites and verified by the authors in the field.
The initial list of churches and religious sites of Avellino province was derived from the website Sistema Irpinia (https://sistemairpinia.provincia.avellino.it/it/luoghi-della-cultura/complessi-religiosi). The list was integrated with the official database of the Italian Catholic Episcopal Conference (CEI) (https://beweb.chiesacattolica.it/edificidiculto/).
