The invention discloses application of a GhMAH1 protein and a coding gene in regulating the cotton fiber length. A cotton GhMAH1 gene is cloned from a long-fiber material Msco-12 of upland cotton, and a virus-induced GhMAH1 gene silencing vector is successfully constructed, and Msco-12 cotton is transformed to obtain 5 GhMAH1 gene-silent cotton-positive individuals. The average length of the single mature cotton fiber of the 5 GhMAH1 gene silencing cotton-positive individuals is 22.20 mm while the average length of the cotton fiber of 3 control plants is 25.47 mm. Compared with the control, the expression of the GhMAH1 gene is inhibited, and the average cotton fiber length is significantly reduced by 12.83%. The application indicates that the GhMAH1 gene can regulate the cotton fiber length and has important value in improving cotton fiber quality and cotton breeding.
