Neisseria gonorrhoea genomic DNA contains extensive repeat sequences and also mechanisms for varying the sequence of express genes via recombination, for these reasons it is difficult to obtain closed genomes with short-read genomic sequencing approaches, regardless of depth and coverage. Understanding processes driven by recombination and repeat sequences, requires a full closed circular genome sequence so that the synteny of the genomic content is complete. Here we present the closed circular genomes of key reference strains obtained by long read SMRT sequencing.
