VPRS 14983 Schedule of Grants in Aid to Public Parks and Gardens

Under Regulations published in the Government Gazette of March 1, 1901 the Government would subsidise the fencing and planting of local public parks and gardens. For each one pound expended from locally raised funds the Government would provide a further five shillings. These funds were not to be applied to street plantings or to the provision of sporting facilities or to parks and gardens within the City of Melbourne except for certain specified ones.Details given in this series are for each year when this subsidy was claimed by the managing body. The scheme was initially administered by the Secretary for Agriculture. The details given in this volume are the name and the location of the management of the park or garden (eg city or shire), the name given to the park or garden or reserve and the financial details including the amount of the local authority's expenditure, the total subsidy paid, the amount of any unexpended subsidy and the amount expended from local funds with the date of notices in the Government Gazette.
