The forensic/legal and drug records of patients (using the Addiction Severity Index (ASI)) at the Drug Addiction Treatment Education and Research (DATER) unit of a Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital (FNPH) in Nigeria.

The research involved retrieving the alcohol/drug and forensic records of 100 patients, who had received addiction treatment, using their Addiction Severity Index (ASI) filled out at admission to a Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital (FNPH) in NigeriaThe data were sourced from clients’ case files at the addiction unit of the FNPH. All patients at the unit with ASI records between 2016 and 2022 were included. The ASI was used to extract data on socio-demographics, alcohol/drug histories, and forensic/legal information.The ASI is a relatively brief, semi-structured interview designed to provide important information about multiple domains of a patient's life that may contribute to their substance abuse syndrome. The instrument focuses on seven areas that are typically affected in the lives of individuals with substance use disorders: medical status, employment, drug use, alcohol use, legal status, family/social status, and psychiatric status. However, for this study, the extracted data were restricted to the sections on substance (drug and alcohol) use and legal status. Information on the lifetime and recent (past 30 days) drug use histories, and drug-related problems was collected on the substance use section.Data obtained were entered into the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 24.0, which was also used for analysis. Descriptive statistics, such as frequencies, were used to describe the pattern of crimes and substance-related disorders.
