Generated in the 1970ies, the mutt yeast strain W303 emerged as a useful tool in basic biomedical research and is in use world-wide. However, only little is known about its biological origins, as this strain emerged from crosses of laboratory yeast strains with uncertain identity. The sequenced genome provides detailed insights into the W303 phylogeny and physiology.
